The Pioneer Valley Council is one of the top trained councils in the United States.  Our training team conducts some of the best training in the region with a reputation for fun while learning!  The Pioneer Valley Council Training Committee shares the view of the National Council, Boy Scouts of America that an untrained leader meeting with youth is unacceptable!

Computer Based Training Options

The following training sessions are available to you as "on-line" trainings in the comfort of your own home or office.  Use them not only for  "first time" training in a subject, but also as an opportunity to review important topics.

Fast Start Training

This video-based training gives new leaders a quick orientation on what they will need to know to start their leadership responsibilities. If your unit doesn't have a copy of the Fast Start tape, please contact your District Executive.  Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venture  Leaders can take Fast Start Training  on line!
 
Youth Protection Guidelines
The Boy Scouts of America expects all volunteers to complete YOUTH PROTECTION TRAINING, and both Local and National Tour Permits now require this training for the leader of all trips.  Learn:     This training is available on-line as a Computer Based Training Module and is also offered as a classroom course.  The Computer Based Training is offered in both English and Spanish, and an alternate version for Venture and Explorer leaders is available.  (Completing either version is accepted training for ALL programs).

New Leader Essentials

This course is the next step to becoming a trained leader. It is a 2-hour, multi-session course intended for ALL new leaders, regardless of program or position. Remember: to be considered trained, you must take both New Leader Essentials and the training specific to your leadership position!  The Pioneer Valley Council Training Committee will offer this course on the following dates. Cub Scout Leader Specific Training

These training cources specific to leadership positions or assistant positions are offered at the same location and time: Tiger Den Leader, Den Leader, Webelos Den Leader, Cubmaster, or Committee Member. You attend the appropriate 3-hour course for your position that drills down in to the specifics of program and what is expected of you as a leader. Boy Scout Leader Specific Training &
Indroduction to Outdoor Skills

This will be an intensive training weekend starting at 5 PM on Friday, September 21, and ending at 11 AM on Sunday, September 23.  You will be camping out and cooking some of your meals.  You’ll learn the role of the Scoutmaster in a boy-led troop, the methods of troop administration, and how to have an exciting outdoor program. Show us your New Leader Essentials completion card, and you will receive the TRAINED patch at the conclusion of the weekend. 



Boy Scout Troop Committee Challenge:
Training for chairs and members

A training for the Troop Committee Chair and Troop Committee Members:  Learn how the pieces of the Troop Committee Puzzle fit together!  You are an important part of the picture.  Through this training you will learn:
Show us your New Leader Essentials completion card and you will receive the TRAINED patch at the conclusion of the session.




Venture Leader Specific Training 

This is training specific to your leadership position in a Venture Crew, such as Advisor, President, Committee Member, etc. It is an all-day course that drills down in to the specifics of the Venture program and what is expected of you as a leader. This course will be offered on the following dates. Links to details will be added as they become available.

This multi-part course is the training that is specific to your role as a leader in a Boy Scout Troop: Scoutmaster, Asst. Scoutmaster or Troop Committee and Outdoor skills.    Pre-Requisite: New Leader Essentials (NLE) is required prior to this training and is available before Shu Shu Ga begins.  It includes the material in September's Boy Scout Leader Specific Training & Indroduction to Outdoor Skills with additional outdoor and Troop mangement topics.  Completion of either course qualifies Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters as TRAINED. Shu Shu Ga will take place this year at
St. Paul Lutheran Church
Elm Street
East Longmeadow
No pre-registration required.  Registration is only at the door on March 30 at 5:00 PM

Course starts at 6 PM on March 30, and continues at 6 PM on succeeding Sunday nights.  Sessions run to 9:30 PM.

Course fee: $30.00 (Thirty) to include training, notebook with handouts, Certificate of Training, and a CD of Outdoor Skills.

Cub Scout Camping

Want to take your Cub or Webelos Scouts Camping? Keeping the OUTING in SCOUTING is critical to the success of any Cub Scout Pack.  But as always, safety comes first.  Before you take your Cubs or Webelos camping, you must be trained in one of these supplemental training courses: Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation or Outdoor Webelos Leader Training.  Scroll down for details!

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO)

BALOO is a mandatory training for Cub Leaders intending to offer Pack camping as part of the unit's program.  Each Pack wishing to do this type of camping must have at least one leader trained in BALOO.  It is a full-day course and will be offered on the following dates:


Saturday, March 29

Outdoor Webelos Leader Training

This is a weekend course held at beautiful Horace A. Moses Scout Reservation. It is mandatory for those Bear/Webelos leaders wishing to take their Webelos den camping.  This course will help the leader to gain a mastery of the outdoor aspects that are part of the Webelos program.  While this training is open to all Scouters, it was strongly suggested by previous participants that Bear Cub Leaders take this training so that they will be prepared when their Bears advance to Webelos. There are some indoor sessions but, much of the program will be held outdoors.  Fire Building, Outdoor Cooking, Wood Tools, Campfire Planning, Site Selection & Tenting are but a few of the many sessions offered.  Participants will be expected to set up a den campsite and sleep out.  A breakfast, lunches, a dinner, and a cracker-barrel are included.
 
April 5 thru 6 (Saturday AM -thru Sunday 3pm

Den Chief Training

This course prepares a Boy Scout to take on a Troop leadership role as a Den Chief with a local Cub Scout Den.  Scouts  will learn about how to work with Cub Scouts to assist the Den Leader.  There will be instruction in:  games to play; songs to sing; skits to perform and other topics.  Den Chief Training should be attended by any youth serving in the Den Chief role, and it is a lot of fun!


National Youth Leadership Training
(Powder Keg)

This exciting and intense week-long course is intended for mature youth leaders within a Boy Scout Troop who have demonstrated leadership skills.  Powder Keg will give these leaders an opportunity to hone and further develop their skills.  It reinforces the leadership skills they need to be truly effective. It is the most advanced Junior Leader training that Scouting offers.



Woodbadge

Wood Badge is designed to meet the advanced training needs of all Scouting leaders regardless of their position in Scouting.  It is open to all Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity, Venture, District and Council volunteers and professionals.  Scouting needs skilled leaders in every aspect of the program.   The purpose of Wood Badge is simple.  It gives men and women the knowledge and skills necessary to strengthen the entire Scouting program from Cub Scouting to Venturing.  It provides dedicated Scouters with the concepts, tools and methods needed to be effective leaders.  Wood Badge creates a structured opportunity to develop and apply these leadership skills.

Registration forms will be available at the Service Center soon, pre-registration is required to plan properly for classes and lunch. 
 
Check-in is at 8:30 AM, classes begin at 9 AM.  Dismissal is planned for 5 PM.

Trainer Development Conference

Have you ever wondered how those crazy trainers do what they do so well?  Well, here's your chance to find out!  This daylong "Train The Trainer" course is open to anyone interested in either learning new training skills, or brushing up on some modern training techniques. All Pack Trainers are strongly encouraged to attend.
