ADVANCEMENT
IN CAMP
How it works and what's available
Summer camp is a great place for a Scout to work on merit badges and other requirements towards advancement in rank. However, advancement is not the only purpose for a boy to attend camp. Camp is designed to provide fun and exciting activities for a scout and his troop. Activities and programs planned by the troop should also include options for quiet time and reflection as well as some free time for the boys.
All advancement at camp is accomplished by methods and standards established by the Boy Scouts of America. Advancement can and should be a big part of your troop's program. By taking an inventory of your troop's advancement needs and building the troop and patrol programs around these needs, advancement will be a natural result of a scout's participation in that program.
GENERAL ADVANCEMENT NOTES
Most merit badge instruction will be done during the morning activity periods. Most areas will be available for additional merit badge instruction in the afternoon and evening. For scouts seeking to complete "partials," these afternoon and evening blocks might be ideal.
PLEASE PREREGISTER FOR ALL MERIT BADGES. Scoutmasters needing forms have them included in Leader's Guide, or they can be downloaded. Please return them at the Pre-Camp Program Meeting in June.
Merit Badge Applications
All requests for merit badges must come through the Scoutmaster, insuring
that the Scout has approval to participate. The camp will have merit
badge applications (blue cards) available.
Partial Completion: If a boy has completed only some of the requirements for a merit badge, those will be indicated on the merit badge application. This “partial” will be returned to the Scoutmaster at the end of camp so the Scouts can continue work with local counselors. There is no time limit to complete these partials.
Leaders Merit Badge Update: After lunch on Tuesday, the counselors will be available to update you on your Scouts' progress. This will help you advise and redirect your boys as needed.
